Deer Run Farm ships day old chicks in the Spring and Fall months. We do not ship chicks in the winter when it's too cold or in the summer when it's too hot for chicks to travel. All of our chicks are vaccinated against Marek's disease to ensure they get off to a good start in life. **NEW FOR 2019: chicks will also be vaccinated against New Castle Disease at no additional cost to the buyer!**
Purchasing in "BULK" quantities of chicks allows for a cheaper price per chick. Plus, all of our chicks are sold straight run. With a 50/50 chance of receiving males to females - the more you buy the better your odds! Not enough room for 25 new chicks? See our "Day Old Chicks: Mail Order (10+)" page.
Chicks for "BULK" mail order need to be in multiples of 25. This ensures sufficient body heat for the chicks to survive their journey. Feel free to mix and match smaller quantities of the different breeds. But, the total number of chicks ordered must equal 25, 50, 75, or 100. (Please see our "Day Old Chicks: Mail Order (10+)" for smaller quantity orders.)
Chicks are shipped weekly on Tuesdays via USPS Express Mail or USPS Priority Mail. Unfortunately, we cannot provide estimates as to when your chicks will ship. All orders will be filled in the order they are received. We also take into consideration the weather in the receiving state. For example, we won't ship chicks to Maine in March. You will be contacted via phone or email when your chicks ship. That will give you 24-48 hours notice. If you have any "black out" dates, indicate them in the "Notes" section during check out and we will not ship your order those weeks.
Ameraucana chick orders will contain both Blue and Black color varieties. Copper Marans chick orders will contain both Black Copper and Blue Copper color varieties. We are not set up to sell only one color variety at this time. If you have a color preference, specify it in the "Notes" section during check out. We will do our best to try and accommodate your preference.
"Breeder's Pick" is exactly that. Chicks from any of the four breeds we raise that are left over after filling all breed-specific orders. When filling Breeder's Pick orders, I try to mix up the breeds to give a variety, but some weeks, I may only have one or two breeds available. You may get only one breed, you may get all four breeds. If you place an order for several different breeds, I highly recommend you include a few Breeders Pick chicks. Not only will it save you money, but it will allow me to get your order out sooner. Often I may be short one or two chicks from one breed to complete an order. If I have the flexibility to substitute with a Breeder's Pick chick, then your order goes out that week. We cannot accommodate breed preferences for Breeders Pick chicks. If you want to be sure to get certain breeds, you should order breed-specific chicks.
All chicks are sold straight run. Statistically, you should get approximately 50% males and 50% females. The larger your order, the closer you will get to this 50/50 split. Much like flipping a coin, you have a 50/50 chance of getting heads or tails but if you flip a coin 6 times, you may or may not get heads 3 of those times . . .
Chicks begin hatching out on Mondays. With the large size of our hatches we allow all the chicks a chance to hatch by opening the hatchers on Tuesday mornings. You will be contacted by phone or email on Tuesday when your chicks have shipped so you'll know when to expect to pick up at the post office.
